For anyone who has been following the adventures of Bishop and Terri, this latest book in the series will be a welcome addition. The hero and heroine really just started out trying to survive a country gone out of control in the first few books and moved on, like reluctant leading characters, getting involved in everything from knocking off various hoodlums to heading off an assassination attempt of the president. Without giving too much away, in this newest rendition of the series they find themselves squarely in the middle of solving just about all the problems of society. This is a tough writing assignment for the author, since the usual handling of this theme by many authors in the genre has been heavy doses of mundane details and an inordinate amount of preaching and political speeches. I have to say I was impressed. This book has plenty of butt-kicking action, and enough mystery, drama and general adventure to keep the pages turning. Good possible solutions for putting society back together and improving it are there too, but cleverly woven into the storyline. The only bummer is the ending, since it sets up what looks to be a really good confrontation with the powers that started the whole mess in the first place and now we have to wait for the author to write it. The Holding Their Own series is a storyline of TEOTWAWKI and the struggle back from apocalypse. It follows the wanderings of husband Bishop and wife Terrie, after the cataclysm.
These are not scholarly dissertations nor how-to prepper's books but rather action packed good/bad guy confrontations. Though the overall storyline progresses at a snail's pace , there are plentiful action packed subplots unfolding along the way to keep the reader entertained. So the books are a lot like potato chips where the last is hardly finished and your reaching for another.
Terri and Bishop end up being the pinnacles of serendipity with seemingly the whole world revolving around just them; from generals and presidents, to elite mercenaries and heads of corporations, all eventually at their door step. Clearly knowing their obligations as main characters, Terri and Bishop rise to each occasion to ensure boredom does not set in.
Along the way there are the coincidental, but oh-so-lucky finds, like windmill farms, grain stores, experimental fuel refineries and handy army installation just over the rise. Even though credulity seems somewhat stretched along the way, the author weaves them all in a semi-believable well written plain English format that elevates the apocalypse genre overall. One is left wondering what a pretty decent writer like this Nobody is doing in a place like this.
Most interesting will be to see how the author deals with renewal once the scavengeable bits and pieces of the past have all worn out. Particularly since our ability to weave, cast, mold and manufacture were lost to the world economy decades ago. Sweat, steam and crossbows until we re-learn to re-hold our own, I suspect.
Until then I will be turning pages briskly.
Once I started reading this series, I found myself eagerly anticipating release of the next one to see what happens next in the lives of the generally likeable though unrealistic (hey, it is science fiction) protagonists. I agree with other reviewers that this episode is the best so far. The author writes well, and draws you into the story and the characters. However, I give it only 4 and not 5 stars because even though the author appears to be trying to portray very important moral and ethical principles by depicting the behavior of characters either favorably or unfavorably, he stops short of clarifying why some things are wrong and some things are right, when there are challenging inconsistencies and conflicts. He has obviously thought greatly about the principles that are in conflict with each other, but has not come to satisfactory conclusions and cannot explain how he comes out on some issues.
SPOILER ALERT for example, the reader is appropriately drawn into the idea that after all the hard work the people of the various West Texas towns have done to become more self-sufficient and survive, by negotiating mutually beneficial voluntary contracts, they are entitled to keep and build on the fruits of their labor. The idea that the new federal government would expect them to then "share" (by threat of force) with other parts of the remaining country because suffering there is greater than in their area inspires deserved reader outrage. However, Bishop and Terry and the good guy townspeople seemed to have no problem eventually taking , by force, the private property of the Midland oil corporation, because they did not approve of the way the head guy was running the place and distributing his resources. What gave them the right to go in and proactively kill off much of the head guy's security forces so they could take over and run things their way? Yes, they had been stolen from, but they did not just take what was stolen from them by the head guy's agents, (directly or indirectly) , which had clearly been wrong, they took over the whole facility, with the head guy left running for his life. What about HIS right to HIS company's property, a company he had built up over many years? Though he certainly was no angel (e.g., using T-Bones' ill wife as leverage), he was not a personification of evil. We were told that when the SHTF, no one in Midland was available to keep things running, there was chaos and thousands were dying, there was no rule of law, we are told, so when he took charge, though undemocratically, his efforts saved many lives (not just his own) and he was continuing to save lives in his city (which is why his people were stealing from others). He struggled to try and feed the city's residents, not just himself. The harder questions are not addressed what if there is a conflict in rights and resources? Which group of nice townspeople is more important to feed? Who decides who lives and who dies, who gets to take and who does not, "for the good of the community?" What if there is simply not enough food or medicine available for everyone who is deserving, even with best work and cooperative efforts ? Also, could Alpha realistically have continued to accept all peaceful refugees indefinitely, regardless of their skills and ability or willingness tomproduce? Really, just how much food CAN you grow in West Texas makeshift gardens without supplies being trucked in? Is any form of martial "law" ever appropriate? Other books in this genre (e.g., One Second After and 299 Days, do a better job tackling these harder questions. There is an anti-corporate undercurrent in this series (likely groundd in the author's real life experienxes) but at the same time a respect for private property and initiative, which creates a paradox. Is only small scale private property to be respected?
I am also wondering when anyone will finally start really running out of ammo! Though we keep hearing again and again about ammo shortages, when big battles come up, everyone always seems to have enough to fight off the bad guys. At least now we know where the oil will come from, at least for a while.
Still, I eagerly await the next installment. I also recommend Joe Nobody's Apocalypse Drift.
